Create a personalized gift box with light activated sound module for the special women in your life. 

Mother’s Day is coming up soon, and it’s a time when we all struggle to find meaningful gifts for the important ladies in our lives. This year I decided that instead of getting a store-bought card or a premade gift basket, I would put my time and thought into creating a wonderful personalized present. 

I wasn’t exactly sure what kind of gift I could make that would properly convey the love and appreciation I have for my mom. I’ve designed handmade cards and pieces of art for her before, but I wanted to do something different that would be one-of-a-kind. Luckily for me, the EZSound Module - Light Activated from Invite By Voice enabled me to create something truly special: a customized musical gift box! I documented this creative process with photos and step-by-step instructions so I could show you how easy and rewarding it is to create your very own musical box. If you want to make your own version of this unique gift, simply follow the steps below.

Step 1: Choose and Record Your Song/Message

Before doing any crafting, decide what kind of song or musical message you’re going to record and load it onto the EZSound Module. Read the instructions carefully beforehand, and make sure to have them nearby while you’re recording. If watching is easier than reading for you, you can also watch 2 minutes long instructional video here to see how recording is done. I used the music app on my tablet to record a brief clip of one of my mom’s favorite songs. I chose to keep the recording under 20 seconds, but your song or message can be longer if you want it to: the EZSound Module- Light Activated can record up to 120 seconds of audio! Don’t forget to test the sound whenever you’re done so you can make sure your module is working properly. Keep in mind that voice chip is re-recordable. So, if you do feel like changing the song or the duration, you can easily do so by following the same steps. 

Step 2: Select a Box

Any kind of box can be used to create your Mother’s Day gift. You can pick up a plain box from the craft store, or do what I did and recycle an old product box. Whatever type of container you use, just make sure that your sound module will fit inside of it and that the material will prevent light from coming into the box until you open it. I chose a sturdy cardboard box with a removable lid. This box was about the size of my hand, and deep enough to accommodate a few extra Mother’s Day goodies in addition to the sound module.

Step 3: Prepare Your Tools and Supplies

When you’re ready to create your box, gather all of the tools and supplies you’ll need. I set up my crafting area with essential supplies such as paint, tacky glue, tape, scissors, and a ruler. For the decorative element of my gift box, I selected a patterned craft paper with navy and white stripes and a colorful floral motif, as well as a pink polka dot paper for the inside.

Step 4: Decorate Your Box

This is the step where you can let your creativity shine! You can use any materials to personalize your box: paint, fabric, washi tape, sequins, you name it. If you’re not much of a crafter, some simple ribbon or stick-on bows can look just as lovely as paint or patterned paper. I primed my cardboard box with white paint, allowed it to dry, and then glued on some strips of craft paper. I used twine to cover up any seams in the paper and added some curly ribbon and a gift tag on top.

Step 5: Place the EZSound Module in Your Box

When your box is assembled and decorated, simply peel the self adhesive backing off of the recordable sound chip and stick it to the inside of the box. I popped mine in the lid so that it wouldn’t be blocked by anything else I put in the gift box.

Step 6: Test Your Musical Box

Now for the moment of truth: making sure your musical box works! The particular EZSound Module used in this process has a light sensor that causes the recording to play. When your box is opened and light hits the sensor, you should hear the music you loaded onto the module (if you don’t hear anything, double check to make sure there is no light coming into the box when it’s closed). Mine worked immediately, and it was very satisfying to hear my mom’s favorite song playing when I opened the lid.

Voilà, you should now have a complete musical Mother’s Day box! You can put a small bonus present inside, or leave it empty and let the box itself be the gift. Any mother will treasure a gift that is so personal and expressive. I can’t wait to see how my mom reacts when she opens her present and hears the music she loves!
